This paper is a work-in-progress account of ideas and propositions about resilience in social-ecological systems. It articulates our understanding of how these complex systems change and what determines their ability to absorb disturbances in either their ecological or their social domains. We call them “propositions” because, although they are useful in helping us understand and compare different social-ecological systems, they are not sufficiently well defined to be considered formal hypotheses. These propositions were developed in two workshops, in 2003 and 2004, in which participants compared the dynamics of 15 case studies in a wide range of regions around the world. Sustainability theory can help achieve desirable social-ecological states by generalizing lessons across contexts and improving the design of sustainability interventions. To accomplish these goals, we argue that theory in sustainability science must (1) explain the emergence and persistence of social-ecological states, (2) account for endogenous cultural change, (3) incorporate cooperation dynamics, and (4) address the complexities of multilevel social-ecological interactions. We suggest that cultural evolutionary theory broadly, and cultural multilevel selection in particular, can improve on these fronts. A RENEWAL THEORETIC APPROACH TO ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARD SETTING AgEcon

The process of environmental regulation is usually a two-step one. In the first step, a standard for environmental quality is set. Then, in the second step, a regulatory mechanism is put in place to achieve the standard. In this paper I show how renewal theory can be used to set the quality standard optimally.

An assessment of five different theoretical frameworks to study the uptake of innovations AgEcon

There are several theoretical frameworks one can draw upon to study the adoption process. Extension Theory, Bounded Rationality, Diffusion Theory, the Theory of Reasoned Action and Consumer Behaviour Theory were of particular interest to us. In assessing the frameworks we looked for contradictions, and how and whether these frameworks could be used to study the adoption process. The assessment was done by using our own conceptual framework of the adoption process and we discuss the results in this paper. We found that the different frameworks don‘t contradict each other and when combined into our conceptual framework they offer very useful constructs for studying the adoption process.

This special issue of Ecology and Society on exploring resilience in social-ecological systems draws together insights from comparisons of 15 case studies conducted during two Resilience Alliance workshops in 2003 and 2004. THE QUEUING THEORETIC APPROACH TO GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT AgEcon

In this paper I propose and develop a new framework for modeling groundwater management issues. Specifically, I apply the methods of queuing theory—for the first time, to the best of my knowledge—to model a groundwater management problem from a long-run perspective. I characterize two simple management regimes as two different kinds of queues and then show how to pose a manager's decision problem as an optimization problem using queuing theoretic techniques. I solve for certain fundamental quantities, such as the expected system size, and then discuss the economic meaning and relevance of the queuing concepts being used. I close by discussing possible extensions to my basic models. Published in Ecological Modelling 85 (2-3, 1996):219-27.
